Writing & Reading Assistance

Arrupe students can access writing and reading assistance through the peer tutoring Writing Fellows Program. Writing Fellows, as successful college writers themselves, provide students with the extra instruction and support needed to facilitate the transition to college-level writing. The Writing Fellows Program emphasizes the importance of solid writing and reading skills across disciplines as a key to academic success. The use of peer tutoring pedagogy helps foster independent learners who are empowered to advocate for their needs. Peer tutoring cultivates a sense of belonging in the academic world that students may not previously ever had, as well as a safe, welcoming, and collaborative environment. The primary focus of the writing fellow is to help students move forward in their writing and reading tasks with ease by leveraging students’ strengths. The Writing Fellows peer tutor will also help students navigate the college experience and connect them with additional campus services.

What we do

The Writing Center

Located on the first floor of Maguire Hall in suites 140 and 141

  • Work with a tutor one-on-one or in small groups
  • Schedule a half hour or one hour appointment time
  • In one-on-one or group tutoring sessions, the Writing Fellows peer tutors emphasize the power in the writing process. Working with students from the brainstorming/pre-writing phase all the way through the revising and editing phases.

Embedded Tutoring

Peer tutors are embedded in English composition and literature classes.

Enhanced ACWRI course sequence

Students enrolled in an Enhanced ACWRI class are required to attend weekly one-on-one appointments in the Writing Center as a part of their course grade. This individualized support will supplement the work done in class and provide students the opportunity to take their writing to the next level.

How to Access Services

How to Best Utilize Writing Support

  • Come with a specific assignment in mind. Come with questions, bring a draft, or provide the assignment instructions for help in breaking down the assignment’s requirements.
  • Review the assignment before coming to the appointment or review your draft.
  • Come prepared with goals for the session and an intended outcome.
  • Communicate clearly with the tutor what those goals are.
  • Follow-up with an additional tutoring appointment if needed.
  • Take notes during the tutoring session to remind you of what to work on.
  • Check in with yourself after completing the assignment. What worked well, what do you need more assistance on, etc.
  • Be proactive in scheduling tutoring appointments in advance leaving yourself enough time to work on the assignment before the due date.
